Revived and rediscovered. The long overdue renovation of this 1909 pump house on the Shawsheen River in Bedford, Massachusetts had a range of goals. The Town wanted to increase the visibility of this landmark building, restore it to ensure its enduring presence, and allow the public a glimpse of the inner workings of the town’s historic infrastructure. Original windows were meticulously restored and retrofitted with new custom-designed decorative steel protective grilles and interior translucent panels, allowing daylight and views while providing insulation. The panels can be opened, allowing passersby to view the historic cast iron pumps within. The brick and granite masonry, slate roof, copper gutter and trim were restored to their original condition with high quality, historically accurate materials.
